Appalachian Trail, Hamburg, Pennsylvania

Shauna’s father had mentioned that he was interested in hiking to the Pinnacle, home of one of the most rewarding views on the Pennsylvania Appalachian Trail. I had completed this section countless times throughout my childhood and was excited to share the experience with them.

The sun had risen and we began our hour long drive to the trailhead.

When we arrived at the Hamburg Reservoir, we grabbed our gear and hit the trail. We would follow the white markers painted on the trees and rocks to stay on course. The first mile or so was a simple walk in the woods but that soon came to an end when we began our climb to Pulpit Rock.

We made it to the first vista 2.5 miles into our hike and were stunned by the view overlooking the vast Pennsylvania forest. We decided to take our first break and soak up some sunshine.

After about a half hour of relaxing, we continued on our hike. From here the trail flattened out making for an easy 2 miles. We stopped and took pictures of some mushrooms growing through the seedlings along the edge of the path.

This section of the Appalachian Trail is well known for its rugged rocks that we had to scramble over almost the entire way. Our feet were getting sore and we were in need of another break. Just ahead we saw the clearing in the trees where The Pinnacle would reward us with much beauty for our travels.

From this side of the mountain there are rolling hills of farm land as far as the eyes can see. We were all so happy to be there to appreciate that moment in time.

With our hearts warmed and sweat on our backs, we started our journey back to the car taking a fairly large loop down through the woods. This was Shauna and Dave’s first long hike and they were proud of the 9 miles they now had under their belts!

The Appalachian Trail is an unforgettable place where memories are made, goals are achieved, and Mother Nature thrives.
